Embarking on a career in IT can be both thrilling and daunting, but with the right approach, you can navigate this dynamic field successfully. Don’t worry. SEB’s Tech Talent Acquisition Specialist, Ieva, has your back as she shares five essential tips to help you kickstart your journey and build a strong foundation for a thriving tech career.

5 Career-Starting Tips from SEB’s Tech TA Specialist Ieva Ročaitė

1.Finding the best fit while learning the basics. Starting a new career path in the vast and dynamic world of IT can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Therefore, I would suggest starting with foundational courses in computer science and programming. Understanding core concepts like algorithms, data structures and basic coding will help you to explore different areas and choose the path that ignites your interests and allows you to thrive and stay motivated in the long run.

      2. Getting serious. Once you feel confident that you have found the perfect fit—whether it’s a particular coding language, working with databases, cybersecurity, or another field—commit fully to it. Developing a deep understanding of one area is more valuable than having a superficial knowledge of many. Consider obtaining certifications in your chosen field to validate your skills and expertise.

3.Build relationships. While studying and improving practical skills is important, finding mentors or like-minded individuals is essential for starting your career in the desired field. Join online groups, participate in live exhibitions, events, or career fairs to build valuable connections.

4.Put your knowledge to the test. Finding your first position in IT can be a journey of exploration and perseverance. One effective way is to leverage your network – reach out to your mentor or like-minded friends and see if they can refer you to a junior position or internship within their company. Additionally, take the time to research the market and identify organizations where you can envision a long-term career. Subscribe to their newsletters and stay alert for openings in junior positions or internships. If you feel you need more practical experience, don’t hesitate to explore freelancing. Use platforms like LinkedIn, GitHub, and Stack Overflow to build and showcase your portfolio. These sites are invaluable for demonstrating your skills and can help you find freelance opportunities in the long run.

5.Grow your confidence. Diamonds are made under pressure, and in my eyes so are the truly great specialists. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or take on challenges; these situations will help you conquer your fears and grow your confidence. Embrace each opportunity to learn and improve, as this journey is essential for personal and professional growth.
